ABSTRACT

Zirdan RCC Dam is the 3rd RCC dam in Iran which is completed and impounded in early 2012. It is located in South east of Iran, in a semi dry area over a wild / heavy flooded river. The height of the dam is 64.5 m and the crest length is 350 m. The project was selected as one of the best concrete projects of 2011 in Iran by Iran Concrete Institute.

The experiences gained in such projects and transferring them to others, will be useful for future projects and may result to speeding up and/or decreasing the cost of future projects.

Since the technology of RCC dams is comparatively new in Iran and many countries, some cases and experiences applied in this project were quite new in Iran, and changed the methods of primary design to simplify the works and/or reduce the costs. Some of these experiences were discussed in a paper published in the 5th international symposium on RCC dams in China, 2007. In this paper we are going to present the complete lessons learned in the project, including those obtained after the China symposium, such as applying a transportation road over the dam body face for some levels of concrete casting and the method for construction of the spillway, which resulted in simplifying the works and reduce the construction cost.
